Jean Dujardin wears a Tissot Heritage 1973

The still on this record is pure OSS 117: Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath in a safari suit, map spread on the hood of a blue rally car in the savanna, a panda-dial chronograph on the wrist pinning the map down. Nicolas Bedos took over the franchise from Michel Hazanavicius for From Africa with Love (2021), set in 1981, with Jean-Francois Halin again writing Jean Dujardin's spy as a man serenely oblivious to his own prejudices and Pierre Niney as OSS 1001, the younger agent brought in to show him up. The French watch site Montres-de-luxe identified the watch as a Tissot Heritage 1973 chronograph and called the arrangement what it is, writing that "this is obviously product placement," the franchise's return to Tissot after the 2006 film's Heritage chronograph and a Jaeger-LeCoultre in the 2009 sequel.

The Heritage 1973 is a 2019 reissue of Tissot's Navigator chronograph of 1973, built in a limited edition of exactly 1,973 pieces: 43 millimeters of steel around a silver dial with black registers, a Valjoux 7753 inside, and a rally strap of the kind Tissot patented in the 1960s. None of that existed in 1981, and the identifying article said so with a shrug, calling the watch an anachronism "since this watch didn't exist at the time, at least not in this 43mm size... but you need a big watch for it to read on screen." In the savanna frame, the panda dial is legible from arm's length, which was the point.
