In a theatre dressing room ringed with vanity bulbs, Jesse Bloom takes a call with a heavy gold watch on a brown leather strap showing on his forearm. Jay Duplass plays Bloom in the second season of Industry, the brash American investor the bankers nickname for his catchphrase, a self-made outsider who shorts the very companies Pierpoint is paid to prop up and enjoys watching the establishment squirm.
Bloom is old money's opposite, a man who made his pile betting against the room, and the gold watch fits him the way everything about him is a deliberate provocation: expensive, a little vulgar, worn where the City's quieter wealth would hide it. The dial never turns to the camera, though, and no maker resolves out of the gold, so the brand stays unidentified.
What the watch says is plainer than its name. Bloom spends his season as the disruption Pierpoint cannot price, the client who refuses to behave, and the watch is exactly the kind of loud, gold, look-at-me object a man wears when his whole pitch is that he needs no one's approval.
