The Counselor is one of Cormac McCarthy's rare screenplays written straight for the screen rather than adapted from his novels, and Ridley Scott shot it as a glossy parable about a lawyer, played by Michael Fassbender, who buys into the drug trade and watches it destroy everyone near him. Javier Bardem plays Reiner, the lawyer's partner: a nightclub owner with a spiked haircut, tinted glasses, Versace prints, and a house full of expensive things arranged like a showroom.
On Reiner's wrist is a gold Bulgari Diagono Professional GMT, the brand's sport-luxe traveler's watch, with the Bulgari name engraved around the bezel in case the one on the dial went unnoticed. Time and Tide Watches reviewed the film's watches and gave this one five stars, not because the watch is good but because the casting is perfect: blingy, gold, slightly ugly, exactly what a man like Reiner would buy. Their verdict was 'Bravo, prop master, that's a match.'
Everything about Reiner is turned up too loud, and the gold Bulgari fits right in with the prints, the cars, and the pet cheetahs. McCarthy gives him long speeches about consequence, but Reiner has built a life designed to keep consequence at a distance, and the watch is one more thing in it.
