In the bar scene of Horrible Bosses, the camera frames Kurt Buckman dead center, arms at his sides, a watch riding the wrist at the bottom edge of the shot while red light strips glow behind the three friends. Jason Sudeikis plays Kurt, who works at a chemical company and has come with Nick and Dale to a rough bar to hire someone to murder their bosses. His own boss is Bobby Pellitt, the coked-up heir who took the company over when his father died. The three of them stand close together in their tucked-in shirts, plainly out of place.
The watch is a round steel piece on a black leather strap, with a pale cream dial, dark Arabic numerals, and the hands sitting low toward six. It looks like an ordinary field watch, the kind worn to an office job, and at this distance the dial gives up no brand and no reference. So it stays unidentified. The frame shows a real watch the film never lets you read.
That suits Kurt, the friend with the steadiest job and the shakiest plan. The watch keeps plain office time on the night he goes shopping for a hitman. The man they end up hiring, Dean Jones, takes their cash to consult rather than to kill, and for all their scheming the closest any of them comes to a murder is the advice they pay for.
