Dr. Michael Morbius cured his own rare blood disease with vampire-bat DNA and turned himself into a living vampire, which is the premise of Morbius, Daniel Espinosa's 2022 entry in Sony's Spider-Man universe. Jared Leto plays him, gaunt and hollow-eyed, a brilliant biochemist who now has to drink blood to stay alive. The trouble is that the cure is wearing off faster each time, and Morbius needs to know exactly how fast.
So he keeps checking his watch. It is a Casio F-91W, the small black resin digital Casio has sold since 1989 for around fifteen dollars, and Morbius uses its stopwatch to time the shrinking gap between one bag of synthetic blood and the next. In one close shot he points at the running display the way a doctor reads a chart. The same cheap Casio turns up on another character in the film, which is the sort of thing that happens when a costume department buys the most common watch on earth.
Watch-spotters across forums and Casio blogs all landed on the F-91W, and the small black digital on Leto's wrist matches it, though no major watch publication ever wrote it up. It is a strange watch for a genius who built a cure in a private lab, and the film never explains it. What it does instead is let a fifteen-dollar Casio keep the clock on a superhero's hunger.
