In John Badham's The Hard Way (1991), Michael J. Fox plays Nick Lang, a Hollywood action star who shadows a real NYPD detective to prepare for a role, and James Woods plays that detective, John Moss, who is not happy about it. Daniel Pyne and Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, and the film runs on the friction between Fox's eager energy and Woods's tightly wound irritation. Stephen Lang, Annabella Sciorra, and LL Cool J fill out the supporting cast.
On Moss's wrist is a Datejust-style watch with a fluted bezel, a dark dial, and a gold Jubilee bracelet, visible when his arms are crossed. It has been identified as a two-tone Rolex Datejust, the model Rolex has made since 1945 and built to be dressy enough for a suit and sturdy enough for fieldwork. The identification comes from a single watch-spotting site rather than a documented source, and the brand cannot be read from the available stills, so the Rolex attribution stays unconfirmed.
