Caan plays the role straight, which is exactly why it works — he is doing a James Caan performance in a Will Ferrell movie, and the friction between those two registers is where most of the comedy lives. Mary Steenburgen plays his wife Emily, and Bob Newhart narrates as Papa Elf.
