The Guilty unfolds almost entirely inside a Copenhagen emergency dispatch room, close to real time, the camera rarely leaving one man's face. Jakob Cedergren plays Asger Holm, a police officer parked on call-taking duty while he waits out a hearing for something that happened in the field. When a woman phones in from a moving car and Asger realizes she has been taken, the film tightens into a thriller conducted entirely through a headset. Gustav Moller premiered it at Sundance in 2018, Denmark sent it to the Oscars, and Antoine Fuqua remade it in 2021 with Jake Gyllenhaal in the chair.
Asger wears a watch through all of it, a Citizen on his wrist, though the film is the wrong place to go looking for it. He spends the picture lit in cold blue-grey at a desk, headset on, police epaulettes on his shoulders and his hands mostly below the frame or lost in shadow. It is a chamber piece about a man who cannot leave his seat, listening to a crisis he has no way to see, and the watch keeps him company the way the job does, present and ticking and never quite in view.
