The Guilty unfolds almost entirely inside a Copenhagen emergency dispatch room, close to real time, the camera rarely leaving one man's face. Jakob Cedergren plays Asger Holm, a police officer parked on call-taking duty while he waits out a hearing for something that happened in the field. When a woman phones in from a moving car and Asger realizes she has been taken, the film tightens into a thriller conducted entirely through a headset. Gustav Moller premiered it at Sundance in 2018, Denmark sent it to the Oscars, and Antoine Fuqua remade it in 2021 with Jake Gyllenhaal in the chair.
Asger wears a watch through all of it, a Citizen on his wrist, though the film is the wrong place to go looking for it. He spends the picture lit in cold blue-grey at a desk, headset on, police epaulettes on his shoulders and his hands mostly below the frame or lost in shadow. For all the time the camera spends on him, the one thing it never quite shows you is the watch.
