Jake Gyllenhaal plays both Adam Bell and Anthony Claire in Denis Villeneuve's Enemy (2013), the psychological thriller that turned the director from a Canadian arthouse name into the auteur who would later direct Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the Dune films. Adam is a Toronto history professor with a quiet girlfriend and a routine life. Anthony is a third-rate actor with a pregnant wife and a secret apartment. They have identical faces, identical bodies, identical scars. The film is adapted from José Saramago's novel The Double, and Villeneuve plays it as a slow descent into a Toronto rendered in yellow filters and looming spider imagery.
Gyllenhaal differentiates the two men through posture and voice rather than wardrobe. Adam slouches and mumbles. Anthony stands straight and projects. The wardrobe and accessory department made decisions about what each character would wear, and the watch would be one of those decisions. Adam's watch should be unobtrusive, possibly old, possibly worn under a cardigan. Anthony's watch should be more visible, probably newer, probably a status piece. The specific watches have not been identified.
If you can confirm what Gyllenhaal is wearing in either role, the database would like to hear about it.
