Jake Gyllenhaal wears a Casio G-Shock

Jarhead (2005) is less about combat than about the misery of waiting for it. Sam Mendes adapted Anthony Swofford's Gulf War memoir, and the Marine scout-sniper unit spends months in the Saudi desert training, hazing each other, and slowly coming apart from boredom and heat. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Swofford, a sniper honed to a fine point who waits through Operation Desert Shield for a ground war that, when it finally comes, lasts four days. On his wrist the whole time is a Casio G-Shock, the square DW-5600C, the cheap and near-indestructible digital a Marine could bury in sand and sweat without a second thought.
