Jai Courtney wears a Hamilton Khaki Aviation

A Good Day to Die Hard gives John McClane a son, and Hamilton gave the two of them matching brands. The studio's announcement paired Bruce Willis's McClane with the classic Jazzmaster Viewmatic and handed Jai Courtney's Jack the brand's newest pilot's chronograph, the Khaki X-Patrol. The watches split the way the men do: the plain automatic for the father, the gadget for the son.

And the X-Patrol is a gadget. It is a chronograph built around a rotating bezel that converts between metric and imperial units, miles to kilometres, feet to metres, gallons to litres, pounds to kilograms, the kind of thing a watch magazine called perfect for a father-and-son team's international adventures. Which is on the nose, because Jack turns out to be a CIA operative who has been running an operation in Moscow the whole time, and the film hauls the two of them from there to the ruins of Chernobyl. It retailed for about seventeen hundred dollars, more than twice the price of his father's Viewmatic, which also fits: the son is the flashier, costlier idea.

It does not save the movie. A Good Day to Die Hard is the entry most fans pretend never happened, and a watch with a conversion bezel cannot rescue a McClane who has stopped being an ordinary man in over his head. The placement, though, is tidy work. Hamilton had dressed McClane since 2007, and for the fifth film it simply doubled the order: one watch for the legend, one for the heir who would never get a sequel.
