In Godard's corner of Le Plus Vieux Métier du monde, a 1967 anthology that hands the history of prostitution to six directors, the year is 2000 and love has been split into departments. Jacques Charrier plays John Demetrius, a visitor from another galaxy who is offered Marlène, played by Marilù Tolo, a specialist in physical love who never speaks, and then Eléonore Roméovitch, played by Anna Karina, who offers conversation and sentiment but will not touch him. Autant-Lara, Bolognini, de Broca, Indovina and Pfleghar handle the past; Godard, in "Anticipation, ou l'amour en l'an 2000," takes the future.

The watch on Charrier's wrist is reported as a yellow gold Cartier Tank by the French site Montres de Luxe, the only published identification, and the article offers no frame from the film to check it against. Louis Cartier drew the design in 1917 and the first examples sold in 1919, and the Tank's film career began before sound did: the same article notes it was the first watch to appear in cinema, on Rudolph Valentino's wrist in The Son of the Sheik in 1926, because the actor simply refused to take his off. By the time Charrier wore one for Godard, the design was fifty years old and strapped to a man from another galaxy.

Charrier came to the segment carrying his own fame: France knew him as the actor who had married Brigitte Bardot after they met filming Babette s'en va-t-en guerre in 1959. Demetrius wants what neither specialist can give him, the two halves of love in one person. He kisses Eléonore, and the film turns to color.
