Hwang Jung-min wears a Rolex Datejust

The real agent was codenamed Black Venus. In the film's telling, in January 1992 Major Park Seok-yeong is recruited by the Agency for National Security Planning, the ANSP, South Korea's intelligence service of that era, to find out how far North Korea's nuclear program has gotten. His cover is a cashiered military officer turned businessman in Beijing, working his way toward a deal to shoot South Korean commercials in scenic North Korean locations. The real man behind the story, Park Chae-seo, got all the way into a meeting with Kim Jong-il, and his identity leaked in 1998 when reports surfaced describing an operation called North Wind. Yoon Jong-bin's film premiered at Cannes and opened in Korea on August 8, 2018, through CJ Entertainment, with Hwang Jung-min as Park, and it follows the operation to its bitter discovery: the spy's own agency is playing domestic politics with his mission.

The Rolexes in the film are props in both senses. Montres de Luxe identified the watch on Hwang's wrist as a 36-millimeter Rolex Datejust in gold and steel on a Jubilee bracelet, observed that it is clearly visible several times including close-ups on the dial, and added the detail that makes this sighting unusual: there are several Rolexes in the film, they play a small role in the story, and within the story they are supposed to be counterfeits. A WatchCrunch member filled in that role. Park gives a Datejust, fake by the script's own admission, to Ri Myong-woon, the North Korean official played by Lee Sung-min, to smooth their deal, and when the two men meet again after the operation has collapsed, the official shows him the watch still on his wrist as a sign that the friendship, at least, was real. No watch publication beyond the French site has covered the film, so the identification stands on one source and a forum, a strong likelihood rather than a certainty.
