Humphrey Bogart plays Dixon Steele in In a Lonely Place, a Hollywood screenwriter with a temper bad enough to make him the prime suspect when a young woman who had been at his apartment is found murdered. He spends the film under a cloud of suspicion, and his neighbor Laurel Gray, played by Gloria Grahame, slowly comes to fear the man she has fallen for.
The watch on his wrist has never been pinned to a brand. On screen it reads as a round chronograph: a white dial with sub-registers at three, six, and nine o'clock, worn on a dark leather strap. It looks more like Bogart's own watch than a studio prop, and it is not the gold Gruen or the Longines Evidenza he is usually associated with. For now it stays an unidentified chronograph.
