Humphrey Bogart plays Ed Hutcheson in Deadline - U.S.A., the managing editor of a New York paper whose owners are about to sell it out from under him. With the presses days from going silent, he pushes his reporters to nail a racketeer who has been operating untouched for years. Ethel Barrymore plays the publisher's widow who controls the paper's fate, and the film, directed by Richard Brooks, is built around Hutcheson's last stand for the kind of journalism he believes in.
On his wrist is the same watch that turns up across Bogart's early-1950s films: a three-register chronograph with a white dial, worn on a dark strap. No one has reliably identified the maker. It appears in In a Lonely Place and Chain Lightning as well, which is part of why it is generally taken to be Bogart's own watch rather than a studio piece, and it is not the engraved Longines Evidenza from Casablanca or the gold Gruen Curvex he also owned. Watch collectors who have studied the dial have proposed a Universal Geneve Compax, though no one has confirmed it.
