Neill Blomkamp's Chappie casts Hugh Jackman against type as the villain, Vincent Moore, an ex-soldier turned robotics engineer at a Johannesburg arms firm whose remote-piloted heavy-weapons platform keeps losing funding to a rival's autonomous police droids. There is a moment in the Tetravaal office when Moore pins Deon Wilson face-down onto a desk, the blue MOOSE drone watching from its stand, and as he flattens his hand on the desk the camera catches the watch: a chunky all-black Casio Pro Trek.
The Pro Trek is Casio's outdoor sensor line, the altimeter-barometer-compass rig built for mountaineers, and you can read the design on Jackman's wrist even when you cannot read the dial: analog hands over a dark face, a small digital window up near one o'clock, a graduated compass bezel, a cluster of pushers on a black resin case. It is a survival watch on a man whose entire battlefield is a fluorescent-lit cubicle. That mismatch is the joke. Moore wants to be a soldier far more than the company will let him be one, and he has dressed his wrist for a war the desk job keeps denying him.
