Peter Weir's Witness (1985) sends a Philadelphia detective into hiding among the Amish. After a young Amish boy, Samuel, witnesses a murder in a train-station restroom, Inspector John Book (Harrison Ford) takes the boy and his mother back to Lancaster County and, wounded and exposed, has to live as the Amish do while the killers look for him. The film turns on the gap between Book's world and theirs.

Book wears a wristwatch identified as a steel Rolex Datejust. Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945, the first wristwatch with an automatically changing date on the dial, and by the 1980s it was a common choice for working professionals. Among the Amish, who reject personal adornment, even a plain steel watch sets Book apart.
