Paul Schrader wrote the screenplay, adapting Paul Theroux's novel about an American inventor who decides civilization is beyond saving and drags his family into the Honduran jungle to start over. Peter Weir directed, and Allie Fox is one of Harrison Ford's least comfortable roles: brilliant, relentless, and increasingly impossible to be around. Fox builds things, including an enormous ice machine in the middle of the tropics, and he genuinely can solve the engineering problems, but he cannot tell when his project has crossed from ambitious to dangerous. Helen Mirren plays his wife, credited only as "Mother Fox," and a fifteen-year-old River Phoenix plays the son who narrates.

On Fox's wrist, clearly visible as the family rides the boat south, is an Omega Seamaster, the round, water-resistant line Omega has built since 1948. The on-screen watch is a light-dialed, gold-toned example; watch enthusiasts have read it as a Seamaster, with some suggesting the dressier Seamaster DeVille.
