Samuel enters Babygirl having just saved the boss. He stops a dog attack on the street outside Tensile, the New York robotics-automation firm Romy Mathis runs, then strides into the office as an intern and chooses Romy herself as his mentor. Halina Reijn wrote, directed, and produced the film; A24 released it on Christmas Day 2024; and the part of Romy, a chief executive who experiments with surrendering control in a dom-sub affair with her own intern, won Nicole Kidman the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice. Harris Dickinson plays Samuel in ill-fitting secondhand suits, a military-surplus parka, and a gold-tone Casio A168WG-9EF.

The Casio was a considered choice, and the person who made it has said why. Monica Jacobs, the film's prop master, who held the same job on Succession, says Samuel is trying out a new persona as he comes into the internship: the suit does not quite fit, he is presenting himself in a new way, he wants to be taken seriously in the tech world, and what he picks is a simple Casio that is gold and flashy at the same time. She allows that it might not quite be the right choice. The watch itself is plain: quartz movement, a backlight, an alarm, a price under a hundred pounds.

Jacobs dressed the rest of the hierarchy in watches too. Romy wears a yellow gold Cartier Tank Française worth north of twenty thousand pounds; Jacobs tried Rolex, Omega, Tudor, and Piaget in fittings before settling on it, reasoning that a woman with Romy's position does not need to flaunt anything with an accessory. Romy's husband Jacob, a New York theater director played by Antonio Banderas, wears a vintage Patek Philippe with a worn-out band and a simple face, chosen to show that the marriage is one of equal status. Esme, Romy's assistant, wears a vintage Cartier Tank Mini, which Jacobs reads as her trying to step into the role. Against that lineup, Samuel's gold Casio is practical, durable, and out of place.
