Through her shifts aboard the Cloverfield Station, a block of resin and metal about four inches long rides on Ava Hamilton's wrist. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Hamilton, the British engineer at the center of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), grieving the two children she lost in a fire while her crew runs a particle accelerator that tears a hole between dimensions and makes Earth disappear. The film arrived with no warning: Netflix announced it during Super Bowl LII and streamed it the same night, February 4, 2018.
The device is a prop, and Propstore later sold it at auction. By the house's account she wore the communicator repeatedly during her service on the station, though it was built from resin, metal, and foam and has no functionality at all. It keeps no time and sends no message. Its only job was to read, in close-up, as the kind of instrument a 2018 astronaut movie straps to a wrist.
There is a watch company called Hamilton, and it has spent decades on movie wrists, including the dive watch Matt Damon wore in The Martian. The astronaut named Hamilton is not wearing one. Her flight suit carries the name in block letters, and the thing on her wrist has no maker at all, only a certificate from the auction house that sold it.
