Martin Scorsese's After Hours (1985) drops Paul Hackett, an ordinary uptown word-processor, into a single nightmarish night in SoHo. Griffin Dunne plays him as a man who only wanted to meet a woman he had talked to in a diner and instead loses his money, gets chased by a mob, is accused of burglary, and ends the night encased in plaster by a performance artist. As that night drags on, Paul keeps checking his watch, and the camera checks it with him.

The watch is a Hamilton Khaki, the brand's military-style field watch: a black dial with white Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour track, luminous hands, and the word "Khaki" printed above six o'clock, worn on a ribbed nylon strap. Hamilton, an American company founded in 1892, had long supplied field watches to the U.S. military and brought the civilian Khaki to market in the mid-1980s, which makes Paul's a watch of its exact moment.
