Gary Johnson teaches psychology at the University of New Orleans and moonlights for the police, posing as a contract killer in sting operations. The real Gary Johnson did the same work for Houston, and Skip Hollandsworth wrote him up in a 2001 Texas Monthly article that Richard Linklater and Glen Powell adapted together, Powell starring as a Gary who invents a new hitman persona for every client. The film premiered at Venice in September 2023, Netflix bought it at Toronto for twenty million dollars, and it reached theaters in May 2024 with streaming that June. The persona that sticks is Ron, the suave killer Gary builds for a meeting with Madison Figueroa Masters, played by Adria Arjona, a woman who believes the only escape from her abusive husband is to have him killed.

Ron's watch is a blacked-out Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. Omega launched the Dark Side of the Moon series in 2013 as a modern interpretation of its Moonwatch chronographs, with cases, crowns, dials, and pushers built from ceramic and the self-winding Co-Axial Calibre 9300 inside. The variant on Ron's wrist appears to be the Pitch Black, reference 311.92.44.51.01.004, listed around twelve thousand eight hundred dollars.

The watch runs through Ron's scenes as part of the full transformation, alongside the leather jacket and the rest of the kit that signals the hitman. The Omega belongs to Ron's wardrobe alone; as himself, Gary wears an Apple Watch on a brown leather strap.
