Gerard Butler wears a Festina Sport

Greenland (2020) is a disaster film with a structural engineer at its center. Gerard Butler plays John Garrity, whose family receives a government alert selecting them for emergency shelter as a planet-killing comet bears down; Morena Baccarin plays his estranged wife, and their diabetic son turns into a running source of jeopardy. Ric Roman Waugh directed, his second film with Butler after Angel Has Fallen, from a script by Chris Sparling.

On Garrity's wrist throughout, and on the film's poster, is a Festina Sport, reference F20361/4: a steel quartz chronograph, 44 millimetres across, with a black dial, three subdials, a red seconds hand, and a black dive-style bezel. It is there for a reason: Gerard Butler is a Festina brand ambassador, and the watch trade press reported that Festina struck a deal with the producers to put one of its chronographs on him, where it stays for the whole film and through its close-ups. Festina is a Spanish-owned brand with Swiss origins, founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1902 and bought by the Spanish businessman Miguel Rodriguez in 1984.
