George Hamilton wears a Rolex Submariner

Jeff Hill robs the famous. In Don Taylor's 1967 caper Jack of Diamonds, George Hamilton plays a gentleman thief who learned the trade from Joseph Cotten's Ace of Diamonds, a celebrated burglar now retired, who warns his protégé that he has grown too bold and should quit. Jeff wants one last score anyway: the Zaharoff diamonds, valued at five million dollars. The production gave the thefts famous victims, with Zsa Zsa Gabor, Carroll Baker and Lilli Palmer appearing as themselves, playing the stars Hill robs. MGM shot it for $1.3 million across Munich, the Bavarian Alps, New York, Paris and Genoa.

The Submariner is attested, but thinly. The French site Montres de Luxe states that Hamilton wears one and illustrates the claim with the theatrical poster. A vintage-watch guide from the dealer Bob's Watches goes further, listing "George Hamilton with his Reference 5513 in Jack of Diamonds" among the Submariner's screen credits, alongside Robert Redford and Charles Bronson. Neither publishes a frame, and the film's signature image does not help: Hill works the vault in a hooded black jumpsuit with his hands gloved, and whatever sits on his wrist stays under the sleeve.

Hamilton came to the picture at a strange peak of fame. He was reportedly earning $100,000 a film, and his relationship with President Johnson's daughter had made his draft deferment a public controversy. The reviews did not match the fee. Critics called the film a low-grade Topkapi, and Roger Ebert wrote that it broke the basic rules of suspense.
