George Clooney wears an Omega Speedmaster

Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity (2013) is a survival thriller set almost entirely in orbit. Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a biomedical engineer on her first shuttle mission; George Clooney plays Matt Kowalski, a veteran astronaut on his last flight, the calm voice cracking jokes while Stone panics. When debris from a shattered satellite tears their shuttle apart during a Hubble repair, the two are left adrift, and Kowalski's eventual sacrifice gives Stone the push to make it home. Kowalski's Omega Speedmaster Professional is not on his wrist. It is mounted flat against the cuff of his spacesuit, the way NASA astronauts actually carried the Moonwatch on a spacewalk, strapped over a suit far too bulky to wear a watch beneath. There is a clean close-up of it: the black dial and three white sub-registers catching the light, the city lights of Earth scrolling past below, the case sewn down so flat that the tachymeter bezel barely registers. It is the most natural watch placement a space film could ask for, because it is exactly where the real thing rides.

The Speedmaster has been NASA's flight-qualified chronograph since 1965, the watch that went to the moon and came back on the wrists of the Apollo crews, and George Clooney is a longtime Omega ambassador, so its presence on a Cuaron astronaut is no accident. What is unusual is how little the film makes of it. The watch is not a flex or a plot device here. It is just keeping time on the outside of a suit, in orbit, while everything else comes apart.
