Matt King runs his life from behind a desk in Honolulu, but he dresses like a man always halfway to the beach: aloha shirt, cargo shorts, and a gold watch as the one upscale note on him. George Clooney plays him in The Descendants, Alexander Payne's 2011 film, as the sole trustee of a large family land trust on Kauai, descended from Hawaiian royalty and the haole bankers who married into the line. When the story opens his wife is in a coma after a boating accident, and he is about to learn she had been having an affair. He takes his two daughters to Kauai to find the other man, a real estate broker played by Matthew Lillard. Shailene Woodley plays the older daughter, angry and quick, and their fights carry the film. Payne's script won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The watch is an Omega De Ville Prestige Small Seconds, the dress line Omega built around a thin case and a small running-seconds dial at six. Writing up the placement, The Jewellery Editor described the film's watch as a 39mm red gold case on a brown leather strap, powered by Omega's co-axial calibre 2002 and certified as a chronometer. In the clearest shot it sits on Clooney's right wrist below the short sleeve: a gold case and dark strap with that small sub-dial at six. The choice was not random. Clooney has been an Omega ambassador for years, so the watch on Matt King's wrist is the brand the actor wears off-screen too.
