Popeye Doyle is one of the great screen cops, and Gene Hackman won the Oscar for playing him. William Friedkin's The French Connection (1971) follows Doyle and his partner Buddy Russo as they chase a heroin shipment through New York, including the car-versus-elevated-train chase Friedkin shot with a recklessness that would end a career today. Hackman plays Doyle as smart, obsessive, casually racist, and certain he is right about everything.

Doyle has been identified as wearing a Timex Marlin on a gold-toned expanding bracelet — BAMF Style's close reading credits the identification to the Watches in Movies index. The Marlin was Timex's mid-century working-man's watch: hand-wound, 34mm, plain silver dial, sold for around $13 in the early 1970s. Timex discontinued it in 1989 and revived it as a nostalgia piece in 2017.
