For 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick asked Hamilton to design a watch that would belong in the next century. The commission went out in 1966, and John Bergey, the Hamilton engineer who would later lead the team behind the Pulsar digital watch, built a custom piece with both analog and digital displays. It was the first watch Hamilton designed specifically for a film. It appears on Gary Lockwood, who plays astronaut Frank Poole, on his wrist for about twenty seconds aboard the Discovery One.

The futuristic prop was too expensive to manufacture, so in 1969 Hamilton sold a more conventional consumer model under the name Odyssee 2001, using the French spelling to sidestep copyright. In 2006, forty years after the commission, the brand issued the ODC X-01 as a faithful tribute to the original.
