Gary Cooper wears a Cartier Tank

Desire is a Paramount caper from 1936 with a pedigree worth unpacking: Frank Borzage directed, Ernst Lubitsch produced and stepped in to direct some scenes himself, and Marlene Dietrich, billed first above Gary Cooper, plays Madeleine de Beaupre, a thief who cons a Paris jeweler out of a pearl necklace worth millions of francs. Cooper is Tom Bradley, an American automotive engineer working in France, and when Madeleine needs the necklace carried across the border into Spain, it travels in the innocent American's possession. Graham Greene, reviewing the film on release, called it the best film Dietrich had appeared in since she left Germany, and audiences agreed enough to make it a box office success.

On Cooper's wrist in the film is a Cartier Tank, the rectangular Louis Cartier design then nineteen years old and still a current fashion item rather than an heirloom. The dedicated film-watch press records the placement plainly: in Desire, Gary Cooper wears a Tank from Cartier. The pairing made period sense. One historian of the marque describes the era simply: the fashion was about chic, chic meant Cartier, and the Tank was the most upfront fashionable watch a man could put on.

Cooper came by the brand honestly. Photographs from the 1930s show him offscreen in a Cartier Tank Basculante, the version with a case that tips over to protect its dial, and leading men of that era routinely wore their own watches in their films. That makes the Basculante a tempting guess for Desire, but it stays a guess: no clean close-up of the watch circulates, no source names the exact model, and the identification rests where the film-watch press leaves it, a Cartier Tank on Gary Cooper.
