Frederic Andrei wears a Rolex Datejust

Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1981) is the film usually named first when people talk about cinema du look, the glossy, style-forward wave of 1980s French cinema. Frederic Andrei plays Jules, a young Paris postman and opera obsessive who secretly tapes a recital by a singer, Cynthia Hawkins, who has never allowed herself to be recorded. The bootleg drags him into a second story entirely, one with crooked cops and two hired killers, and he spends much of the film outrunning both on a moped.

What Jules wears on his wrist is harder to pin down than what he carries in his bag. A French watch-in-film column says it is a steel-and-gold Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet, but the claim has no source attached, and the watch is not visible in the stills that survive from the film. A steel-and-gold Datejust is plausible enough, but it remains a single unverified claim that no surviving still backs up.
