Franka Potente wears an Omega Speedmaster

Season four of Dark Winds moves the case off the reservation and into Los Angeles in the early 1970s, adapting Tony Hillerman's The Ghostway. The search for a missing Navajo girl runs through Irene Vaggan, an assassin Franka Potente plays as a gender-swapped version of the novel's killer, a German-born professional with a Nazi grandfather and a growing fixation on Joe Leaphorn.

The watch turns up in the fourth episode, Ni' Ániidí (The New World), in a tight insert shot: a chronograph in warm bar light, big enough to fill the screen. The frame shows the Speedmaster's architecture plainly enough, a light dial with three registers, baton hands with luminous inserts, a dark tachymeter bezel and a steel bracelet. No reference number survives the scene's orange cast, so the exact model is still open.

The period raises no objection. Omega introduced the Speedmaster in 1957 as a racing chronograph, NASA qualified it for spaceflight in 1965, and Buzz Aldrin wore his on the lunar surface in July 1969. By the season's early-seventies Los Angeles the Speedmaster was one of the most famous watches in the world, so nothing about the setting rules it out. The dial does narrow things: the classic Moonwatch face is black, while this one reads light even under the orange light, closer to the silver and grey dials Omega was putting on Speedmasters like the Mark II in those same years. Which Speedmaster stays open until a cleaner frame or a word from the production settles it.
