An unemployed accountant, two years into a burnout, takes a job transcribing wiretapped phone calls without asking who's listening or why. Thomas Kruithof's The Machinery of Shadow (2016), released in France as La Mecanique de l'ombre, drops Francois Cluzet's Duval into the world of intelligence services through the most mundane entry point imaginable: temp work. Denis Podalydes plays the enigmatic figure who hires him, and Sami Bouajila is the handler whose loyalties are never clear. The film is a paranoid thriller built on the premise that you can become complicit in something terrible just by showing up and doing your job.
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metrographe on Cluzet's wrist, on a leather strap, was a product placement arranged with the manufacture. Parmigiani, founded by Michel Parmigiani in 1996 in Fleurier, Switzerland, makes its own movements, cases, and dials in-house. Introduced in 2014, the Tonda Metrographe is the brand's most accessible chronograph, a 40mm steel watch with an unusual detail: the chronograph pushers are built into its curved lugs rather than set into the case beside the crown.
