Florence Pugh wears a Rolex Submariner

Zach Braff wrote A Good Person with Florence Pugh in mind, calling her a next-level actress, and by the time MGM released the film in March 2023 the two had separated: Pugh confirmed the split, after three years together, eight months before the premiere. Braff has said the script also carried his own losses, a sister, his father, and his friend Nick Cordero, all gone during the lockdown years. The film he made from that runs 129 minutes. Pugh's Allison, an aspiring musician, causes a car accident that kills her fiance's sister and brother-in-law, loses the engagement, and slides into opioid addiction, until she collides at an AA meeting with Daniel, her ex-fiance's father, a recovering alcoholic played by Morgan Freeman, with his granddaughter Ryan caught between them.

On Allison's right wrist, Montres de Luxe identified a Rolex Submariner in yellow gold with a black dial, reference 116618. What a gold Submariner is doing in this story is a question the identification record leaves open: the film never explains it, and the collectors who spotted it admitted they did not know how it fit. The gap is worth recording rather than filling.

The numbers were unkind, 3.1 million dollars worldwide, against reviews that called the film busy, baggy, and schmaltzy while crediting terrific performances. It was, in the end, a role written for an actress by a man who then lost her, played out between the woman who caused a crash and the grandfather holding the family it broke together at AA meetings.
