Open Speed Racer's locker at the track and his racing life is laid out on the shelf: a pair of yellow driving gloves, a photograph propped against the back wall, and a wristwatch with an unmistakable square case. The Wachowskis' Speed Racer (2008) turns the 1960s anime into candy-colored live action, with Emile Hirsch as a young driver raised in the family garage, whose older brother Rex was believed to have died in a crash years earlier. The watch never reaches his wrist on screen. It stays in the locker among the gear he keeps close.
The square case belongs to the TAG Heuer Monaco. Heuer introduced the Monaco in 1969 with a water-resistant square case and a blue dial, building it around one of the first automatic chronograph movements and giving it a shape almost no other watch has used. Steve McQueen wore one in Le Mans, and the model has been tied to motor racing ever since.
