Miles Cullen is smarter than his job. Elliott Gould plays a bank teller in a Toronto shopping mall who finds a note left by a would-be robber and decides, instead of calling the police, to skim cash from the robbery for himself. Daryl Duke directed The Silent Partner (1978), and what starts as a clever crime becomes genuinely dangerous when the robber — Christopher Plummer, playing against type as a vicious psychopath — figures out he was shortchanged and comes looking for his money. Gould is perfect for this because he plays Cullen as bored and passive-aggressive, the kind of guy who has been quietly furious about his mediocre life for years and finally sees a way out.
Cullen's watch has not been identified. The film describes it as gold-toned, which is an interesting choice for a bank teller — either he has ambitions beyond the counter, or he inherited something from someone who did. In a movie where everyone is calculating angles, even a watch feels like it might be part of a plan.
