The Bre-X scandal destroyed $6 billion in shareholder value when a supposed Indonesian gold deposit turned out to be salted with river gold. Stephen Gaghan's Gold (2016) loosely adapts the story, with Matthew McConaughey gaining 45 pounds to play a desperate Reno prospector and Edgar Ramirez as Michael Acosta, the geologist who finds — or claims to find — the gold.
Ramirez wears an unidentified watch as Acosta, a character based loosely on Michael de Guzman, who fell from a helicopter over the Borneo jungle before anyone could question him about the fraud. Acosta is the quiet half of the partnership — he does the fieldwork while McConaughey's Kenny Wells does the hustling — and his wardrobe reflects that restraint. The geologist who actually knows what's in the ground doesn't need to perform success.
