Eddie Murphy wears a Shinola The Duck

Axel Foley came back forty years after the original. Beverly Hills Cop arrived in 1984, its sequels in 1987 and 1994, and then the franchise sat quiet until Netflix released Axel F on July 3, 2024, the first entry to skip Paramount. Mark Molloy directed, his feature debut. Axel returns to Beverly Hills because his estranged daughter Jane, a defense attorney, is threatened over a murder case that runs into police corruption and a cartel; Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot all reprise their roles, and Kevin Bacon plays the antagonist, Captain Cade Grant.

Axel wears the Duck from Shinola in the black colorway, a 42 millimeter quartz dive watch rated to 200 meters that sells for about 650 dollars, and it is hard to miss; the watch sits plainly visible on the film's poster. Shinola assembles its watches in Detroit from Swiss Ronda movement kits, in a company revived out of an old Detroit shoe polish factory, and the watch is built in Foley's hometown; Foley has been a Detroit cop since the first film.

Only one watch gets named out loud in the film, and it is not Axel's. Confronting Captain Grant, Axel points to the thousand dollar shoes and the gold Rolex Daytona on a police salary and tells his daughter he has seen crooked cops before, but this guy is next level. The glimpse on screen suggests the yellow gold Daytona reference 126508, which lists around 41,200 dollars. Axel's Duck costs 650 dollars.
