In one of the film's quieter scenes, Dwayne Johnson stands with his sleeves rolled and his sunglasses in his hand, a slab of a watch on his wrist. He plays Ray Gaines, a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue-helicopter pilot, and Brad Peyton's San Andreas (2015) will spend the next two hours tearing California apart around him: a magnitude-nine earthquake that levels Los Angeles, collapses the Hoover Dam, and drives a tsunami into San Francisco.

The watch is a Panerai Luminor 1950 Submersible in titanium, 47mm of it, with a rotating dive bezel, a black dial, and a black rubber strap. Which exact reference is a matter of mild dispute among watch sites, the standard PAM00305 or the anti-magnetic PAM00389, but both are the same 47mm titanium Submersible and the difference does not show on screen. Johnson wears Panerai on screen and off, and this is the kind he favors: big, legible, made for water.

Gaines spends much of San Andreas in the water: in boats, in floods, and finally under the tsunami that hits San Francisco. The Submersible is built for exactly that kind of immersion, rated to a depth far past anything the film puts him through.
