Don Johnson wears a Fossil Uomo

Dennis Hopper directed The Hot Spot (1990), a slow-burn Texas noir adapted from Charles Williams's 1953 novel. Don Johnson plays Harry Madox, a drifter who rolls into a small town, takes a job selling used cars, and starts planning to rob the bank across the street. Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly are the two women who complicate everything, and the blues soundtrack came from John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis, recorded in one of Davis's last sessions before he died in 1991.

Fossil was founded by Tom Kartsotis in Richardson, Texas, in 1984, the name taken from his nickname for his father. By 1990 the brand had a niche selling fashion watches that looked more expensive than they were, styled after vintage designs and priced for the department-store counter. Harry's is the Fossil Uomo, Italian for "man," a gold-toned dress watch on a brown leather strap, the right kind of slightly-more-than-it-is watch for a drifter playing the part of a respectable used-car man.
