Dominic Cooper wears a Rolex

Dominic Cooper plays both leads in The Devil's Double (2011), Lee Tamahori's film drawn from Latif Yahia's memoir of being forced to serve as the body double for Uday Hussein, Saddam's elder son. As Uday, Cooper wears a gold Rolex, the conspicuous wealth the real Uday was known for. One review of the film describes him as a man bathed in gold who kept a walk-in wardrobe of Rolexes and Armani.

Which Rolex is the open question. The watch is not legible in any available frame, and the sources that name a model disagree, one calling it a gold Cosmograph Daytona and another a gold Day-Date with a diamond bezel. With no clear on-screen read and no reliable source, the record holds at the brand level: a gold Rolex on Uday, model unconfirmed.

Tamahori, who had directed the Bond film Die Another Day a few years earlier, stages Uday's world as pure excess, the nightclubs and the cars and the gold. The watch is one more piece of it, not a single signature timepiece.
