Dolph Lundgren wears a Casio G-Shock

In Creed II (2018), Ivan Drago stands over a checked tablecloth in a restaurant lined with black-and-white photographs, Sylvester Stallone's Rocky across the table, and tells the man who beat him what the loss cost. The Hollywood Reporter called it the scene where Drago "lays out what his life has been like after losing that fight in 1985," and Dolph Lundgren told Cinemablend it is "one of the few scenes where we understand what the hell this guy is about." In the corner of the frame, on Drago's left wrist, sits a black resin square: a Casio G-Shock DW-5600, as the G-Shock news site G-Central identified it.

Lundgren filled in the history for Heroic Hollywood. When the Soviet Union fell, Drago was thrown out of Russia and lost everything. His wife divorced him, "for a richer man, probably." He ended up in Ukraine with his son Viktor, and by the time the film finds him he has spent years training the boy for the match he believes will take the family name back, against Adonis Creed, the son of the man Ivan killed in the ring.

The DW-5600 is the square G-Shock, the base model that still carries the case of the first G-Shock ever made, which G-Central's guide to the series calls "a timeless design that has not just survived but thrived over three and a half decades." It is one of the most affordable G-Shocks in the catalog, and the one Casio reaches for when it builds color editions and collaborations. Kikuo Ibe, the engineer who created the G-Shock, still wears the square himself. In the restaurant frame Drago's watch is a shape, black resin on the left wrist, enough to call the family but not the exact variant. When Lundgren sat beside Stallone for the film's press interviews, dressed as Drago, the same square was on his wrist.
