Diego Maradona wearing a Chanel J12 Superleggera makes perfect sense if you knew the man at all. Emir Kusturica's 2008 documentary follows the Argentine football legend through interviews, archival footage, and visits to Cuba and Buenos Aires, capturing Maradona's personality in full — political, theatrical, contradictory, and never boring. Kusturica, who directed Underground and Black Cat White Cat, brings his own maximalist sensibility to the material.

The J12 Superleggera was Chanel's attempt at a sportier version of their ceramic watch, borrowing the name from Italian automotive tradition (superleggera means "super light"). Chanel released it in 2003 with an aluminum and ceramic construction, chronograph complications, and a matte black finish that looks nothing like what most people picture when they hear "Chanel." That's the point. Maradona was drawn to things that confounded expectations — a fashion house making a serious sports chronograph is exactly the kind of contradiction he would appreciate. The man wore fur coats, Dolce & Gabbana suits, and earrings shaped like the Cuban flag. A Chanel watch was the least surprising thing about him.
