Denzel Washington wears a Suunto 9 Peak All Black

Sony's trailer for The Equalizer 3 ends on the watch. The last shot before the release date card is a macro of a black sports watch held in a hand, its round screen reading 00'09.0 above the words "Set timer": nine seconds, loaded and waiting. Anyone who saw the first two films knows what the timer is for. Robert McCall clocks himself while he works through the men in the room. In the third film, Denzel Washington's retired operative is recuperating in Altamonte, a small coastal town in southern Italy, when the local Camorra, run by the Quaranta brothers, starts killing villagers to force them out of their homes. Antoine Fuqua directed again, Richard Wenk wrote again, and at 109 minutes the film is the shortest of the three. Dakota Fanning plays Emma Collins, the CIA officer McCall cooperates with.

The watch is a Suunto, the third Suunto in three Equalizer films. McCall wore a Core All Black through the first two, and one watch blog that pored over those films found the production had retouched the Core's display in post, tinting the digits blue into a configuration Suunto never sold. The third film hands him a current model. Spotters identify it as the 9 Peak All Black, and the trailer's closing shot carries most of the evidence: the countdown layout, the apostrophe in 00'09.0, and the Set timer label match the timer feature Suunto documents for the 9 Peak. No frame shows the brand name, and neither Suunto nor the production has said anything about the placement, which is why the identification stops short of certainty.

On Suunto's spec sheet the 9 Peak All Black is a 43 millimeter GPS multisport watch, 10.6 millimeters thin and 62 grams, with a sapphire crystal over the touchscreen and a stainless steel bezel under the black coating. It measures blood oxygen, is water resistant to 100 meters, runs anywhere from 25 hours on full-accuracy GPS to 170 hours in Tour mode, and is built in Finland. The feature the trailer chose for its final image is the simplest one on the list: a countdown timer, set to nine seconds.
