Late 1940s Los Angeles, the way Carl Franklin films it, is a place where a black man can own a house in a nice neighborhood but can't safely knock on the wrong door. Denzel Washington plays Easy Rawlins in the 1995 Devil in a Blue Dress, adapted from Walter Mosley's novel — an unemployed World War II veteran who takes a shady job to make his mortgage payment and ends up in the middle of a murder investigation. A mysterious white man hires Easy to find a woman named Daphne Monet, and the search pulls him into blackmail, political corruption, and racial tension. Washington plays Easy as smart and careful. Don Cheadle steals every scene he's in as Mouse, Easy's violent childhood friend who shows up to help in the most alarming ways possible.
Rawlins wears a field watch, the kind of practical military-style piece a veteran would have brought home from the war. The brand has not been identified.
