Dennis Quaid wears an Omega Speedmaster

On Easter Sunday in 2009, near Marco Island, Florida, the pilot of a King Air 200 died of a heart attack in the air, and a passenger named Doug White had to land the plane. Sean McNamara's film of the story, written by Brian Egeston, casts Dennis Quaid as White and Heather Graham as his wife Terri, and Amazon released it on Prime Video on April 7, 2023, the Friday before Easter, fourteen years almost to the weekend after the emergency it retells. Reviewers were not kind; the consensus called it predictable and unsubtle, a disappointing attempt to dramatize an uplifting fact-based story.

The watch Montres de Luxe identified on White's wrist is an Omega Speedmaster, a chronograph on a steel bracelet, and watch forums spotted it independently in the trailer. The Speedmaster's credentials happen to be a checklist for exactly this kind of day. Omega launched it in 1957; NASA bought chronographs from four brands in the 1960s and tested them nearly to destruction; one watch survived, and on March 1, 1965 the agency declared the Speedmaster flight qualified for all manned space missions. It flew on Gemini 3 three weeks later, went to the moon on all six lunar landings, and remains the only watch qualified by NASA for work outside a spacecraft.

So the costume sits quietly in the right register: a passenger doing a pilot's job, wearing the watch that earned its place by being the only one to survive the testing. Quaid's White gets the happy ending the real one earned, and the film, whatever the critics said of it, kept the date: an Easter story, released at Easter.
