In a tailor's shop hung with rows of silk ties, Gus Sackey sits with one arm stretched along the back of an orange velvet banquette while two colleagues talk over him. David Jonsson plays Gus in Industry, the HBO and BBC banking series, and Gus is the Eton-educated outlier on the graduate desk, the one with the poshest schooling and the least patience for the game.
The scene is about clothes as armor, three young men outfitting themselves for a world that reads a person by their tailoring, and Gus is the one who already knows the code and is bored by it. His watch is on the wrist draped along the couch, but it stays in shadow and turned away, no dial or case clear enough to name, so the brand goes unrecorded.
That suits him. Gus is the rare figure in Industry who treats the whole costume of wealth, the watch and the suit and the right accent, as a thing he can take or leave, and by the later seasons he has left it, walking out of banking entirely for a life that has nothing left to prove.
