Black Narcissus (1947) is Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's story of Anglican nuns trying to found a convent high in the Himalayas, slowly undone by the altitude and their own memories. David Farrar plays Mr. Dean, the blunt British agent the sisters rely on and distrust in equal measure. At 6:01 in the evening he holds up an open-faced pocket watch: a white enamel dial, black Arabic numerals, and a small seconds register, the dial signed "Arthur Saunders, The Walsall Watch Depot." That is an English retailer's name rather than a manufacturer's, the kind of shop-signed watch a working Englishman of the period would carry. The signature is legible on screen, so the piece is identified by its retailer even though the movement's maker is not named.
