Dave Foley spends much of Space Cadet (2024) behind a NASA podium, white hair, gray suit, a red tie, a flag to either side. He plays Rudolph Bolton, who runs the astronaut training program, and the comedy turns on a recruit who has no business being there. Tiffany "Rex" Simpson (Emma Roberts) is a Florida bartender and alligator wrestler who once won a full scholarship to Georgia Tech, then dropped out after her mother died to look after her father. She is a gifted amateur inventor and a hopeless candidate on paper, so her best friend fixes the paper, padding the NASA application without telling her, and Rex gets in.
By Hamilton's own account, the watch on Bolton's wrist is the Khaki Aviation X-Wind Auto Chrono, reference H77736733: a 45mm case in black PVD steel, sapphire crystal, an automatic chronograph good for sixty hours wound, water-resistant to 100 meters. It sold for 2,595 dollars and has since left the catalog. Its headline feature is one Hamilton says no watch carried before it, a drift-angle calculator. Worked through a pair of inner bezels and their crowns, it lets a pilot dial in heading, wind, and airspeed and read off how far a crosswind will push the plane off its heading.
It is a real flight computer shrunk onto a wrist, and it answers a question space does not ask. Crosswind drift belongs to runways and propellers, not orbits, yet here it is on the man whose job is sending people out of the atmosphere. Hamilton, for its part, files the cameo on the watch's own product page, in among the case size and the water resistance: featured in Space Cadet, worn by Rudolph Bolton, played by Dave Foley.
