In an upstate New York parish, a priest is found dead in a locked room, and the weapon is a knife fashioned from the red devil's-head finial of a lamp. The local police chief, Geraldine Scott, played by Mila Kunis, summons Benoit Blanc. Rian Johnson wrote and directed Wake Up Dead Man (2025), and he surrounds Daniel Craig's Southern-accented detective with a parish's worth of suspects.

Josh O'Connor is Father Jud Duplenticy, a young priest who used to box and who left the ring after killing a man in a match. Josh Brolin is Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, the parish's charismatic firebrand. Glenn Close plays Martha Delacroix, a devout church lady and Wicks' right hand; Jeremy Renner is a town doctor drinking his way through a divorce; Kerry Washington a tightly wound lawyer; Andrew Scott a formerly bestselling author trying to get his career back; Cailee Spaeny a disabled former concert cellist hoping for a miracle cure.

The watch question was settled weeks before the film reached theaters.
