Louis Schneider is a Marseille detective with the regional crime squad and a drinking problem that is winning. Daniel Auteuil plays him in Olivier Marchal's MR 73, released abroad as The Last Deadly Mission. Years earlier Schneider put away a man named Charles Subra for murdering a young woman's parents. Now Subra is being released early, and the daughter, Justine (Olivia Bonamy), comes to Schneider because he is the one who caught him before. Marchal spent years as a real policeman, and he shoots MR 73 with a procedural grain and fatalism to match.
The watch on Schneider's wrist has been identified as a steel Rolex Datejust on a modern Oyster bracelet, the kind with brushed outer links and a polished centre. That identification comes from a single French watch column in October 2008, reprinted by another site but never independently confirmed, although the column did run frames of the watch from the film. In an outdoor scene with Justine, a steel watch on a metal bracelet sits on his wrist, consistent with a Datejust but pushed too far up his sleeve to read. Rolex launched the Datejust in 1945 as the first wristwatch to change its own date in a window on the dial, and it has been the brand's steadiest seller ever since. No clear shot fixes the reference, so it stays a steel Datejust without a confirmed model.
